"I have learned that there is a price to be paid for doing the right thing.
To fight for the interest of ordinary people, a leader must always
work harder, think faster, and be more determined..."

Pete Sorenson's statement on the April 14 Oregon Supreme Court same sex marriage decision

In the wake of the Oregon Supreme Court's decision in Li, I think it is doubly important that Oregonians who believe in the basic fairness for all people support S.B. 1000. S.B. 1000 is a comprehensive amendment to the Oregon Civil Rights Act that guarantees fair treatment to gays and straights alike in the important areas of housing, employment and public accomodations. It also creates a state civil-union program that will ensure that all families recieve the legal protection they need. This bill has bipartisan support and is supported by the governor as well. It is reasonable and moderate and it can and should pass. The Legislature needs to hear all our voices. The Legislature is the body that needs to take the lead in setting a humane and equal policy for all our people. This is a matter of basic fairness. It is also a matter of making sure that every Oregonian has the opportunity to contribute to our state, limited only by their individual talents and abilities. These basic protections will ensure that Oregon is a good place to live for all our people and all our families. It will also make the state more prosperous economically, and will continue our tradition of leading the nation rather than following.
