Election Thoughts May 2, 2008

Hello Friends around Oregon,

A few thoughts -- and ton of information -- as we're down to the line on the BIG PUSH. We need your help in the crucial campaigns.

Now, a few key points: First, every vote counts! The counting of the ballots occurs, starting at 8 pm on Tuesday, May 20, 2008. You must either mail or deliver your ballot to a county election office or an official drop off site and have it received by 8 pm or your ballot won't count. In other words, the post mark date of a mailed ballot isn't a factor in whether a ballot gets counted or not. If you have any questions about your right to vote or someone else's right to vote, immediately telephone your county elections office.

Second, the following are a few of the key races going on around the state. This is by no means an exhaustive list, just a list of some of the people I'm supporting. They all need your help right now. Please contact them on the websites I give you.

Third, I'm continuing my speaking around the state. I spoke in Salem and Eugene recently and I am planning a trip to Medford, Ashland and southern Oregon on May 30. For more information on the upcoming southern Oregon trip and how you can help us, please contact Jay Romano at coltrane422@hotmail.com

If you'd like me to come to your community and promote VOTER OWNED OREGON, get in touch with Jay. You can learn more about and contribute to my efforts on www.petesorenson.com

Fourth, I'm inviting all of my supporters to a special fundraising event for ROB HANDY at 5:15 pm on Monday, May 12, 2008 at Rob's campaign headquarters, 389 West 6th Avenue (downtown Eugene, parking in the rear). This is the second event I've done for Rob and I'm impressed with how he could help change Lane County government. Please RSVP on this event to tiakim1@yahoo.com and please include HELPING ROB in the subject line.

Finally, all of these candidates need your help right now. They need your money (except for Jim Middaugh who's a voter owned candidate) and they need your time. Please help them out!

Here's a short list in no particular order:

Steve Novick, candidate for United States Senate. Steve's waged a great race, a great progressive candidate and is leading in the polls. Our country would be better if Steve became our Senator. Contact: www.novickforsenate.org.

John Kroger, candidate for Attorney General of Oregon. As a lawyer, this race is important to me. John is a wonderful person, has all the skills and credentials and has the heart to do a great job as AG. He especially needs volunteers and you can contact his campaign to help by calling or emailing Norah in Portland at 503-224-3316 or at norah@johnkroger.com . You can also contact Sara in Eugene at 530-574-6584 or s.beanduncan@gmail.com The website is www.johnkroger.com .

Rob Handy, candidate for Lane County Commissioner, North Eugene District. Rob is working his heart out, has knocked on over 12,000 doors, and is in a neck and neck race to unseat the conservative incumbent. Go down to his headquarters at 389 West 6th Avenue (corner of Lawrence and 6th in Eugene) and call 541-494-9595 and volunteer, get a lawnsign, contribute and help. Rob is also on the web at www.robhandy.com .

Kitty Piercy for Mayor of Eugene. Kitty is a long time ally of mine, she and I served in the Legislature together and she's a strong progressive mayor for our city. She's also being outspent by a huge margin right now and we need to pull together for her victory. Contact Kitty's campaign at www.kittypiercy.com .

Barack Obama. I met Senator Obama when he was in Eugene a few months ago. I was so impressed with the Senator and his background and ideals that I got really involved with his campaign. I spent ten days in Pittsburgh, PA during the final push for the PA primary. I truly believe Senator Obama is the kind of leader our Nation needs right now. The Obama campaign is at www.barackobama.com . I may be going to Montana for their primary on June 3, following ours in Oregon on May 20, if time allows.

Jim Middaugh for Portland City Council. Jim is a great person and has submitted 1682 signatures of Portland registered voters (accompanied by five dollar contributions) to qualify for Portland's voter owned election funding. In other words, you won't have to contribute money to this experienced and dedicated progressive candidate, they just need the help of people in Portland to win this race. To help on Jim's campaign, contact them at 503-231-2859 or on the web at www.jimforportland.com .
